Getting Started with Pop Gun Pocket Books
If you’re a teacher, an artist or you run a small business and you like to give things a go yourself, then this is the best place to start. This page will constantly be updated with any new tips, tutorials and advice to help you along your way.
I’ll be talking a lot about iBooks Author:
I believe that when it comes to self-publishing a fixed layout art, or picture book, there is absolutely no better choice than iBooks Author. It has a small learning curve, includes interactivity and a huge amount of iOS devices in the market that read iBooks. It might not be the biggest marketplace, but it’s big enough and a great way to get started with self-publishing. And it’s FREE!
iBooks Author Image sizes: A tutorial on the best quality sizes to use in your art and picture books.
iBooks Author Widget Tutorial: A tutorial on how to create a Fade transition effect, to show your work-in-progress pencil lines under the final art.
Articles on writing:
Writing the First Draft: A lot of people get stuck early on because they spend way too much time editing their work before finishing. Here are some simple rules to help out.
How to Start Writing a Book: This is more of an essay poking fun at myself and my problems with procrastination, or what I like to call “Productive Procrastination”… which is really the same thing.
My Problem with Writing in Rhyme: Writing rhyming children’s stories in bits and pieces in different notebooks and at different times, just doesn’t seem to work for me.
If you need to set up a website:
Step by Step Instructions: I created a separate site, that was inspired by wife. It gives step by step instructions on how to register a Domain Name, set up Hosting and load a website theme. Click here to start your site.
Domain Registration: NameCheap is definitely the way to go. Great prices and cover every country.
Hosting: The Number 1 WordPress recommended hosting site is BlueHost. Not only are they recommended by WordPress themselves, but they are very affordable and have great customer service. I know that from experience, and I’m based in Australia.
Website Themes: The theme I’m using on Pop Gun Pocket Books is from Studiopress. But I have also used ThemeForest a lot for my other sites, and client sites. They have a huge range and you should check them out.
Book: The best book, and one that I have read at least 3 times is Stephen King’s “On Writing“. I can’t speak highly enough of this book. It is the one book that promises nothing, but an explanation of how this one author works, and what works for him. If you’re considering writing anything, get this book!
Software: When it comes to “Writing” software, there really is only one choice that makes writing, and organizing your thoughts easy. Get Scrivener… you won’t regret it.
Learn Scrivener: Scrivener is one of those apps that can do quite a lot, and if you want to get the most you can out of your writing, think about doing the Learn Scrivener Fast course by Joseph Michael. Click here to get more info.
